Attracting audience

http://youtu.be/bg6sO9DivgE

How will we attract our audience?

Attracting our audience for our opening sequence is obviously an important thing to do so we have to make sure our audience are interested in what we are doing.  What I mean by this is that even though we are only just doing the opening of a film, we also have to think about what our film would actually be about so that our storyline is good and understandable to the audience. The purpose of an opening of a film is to try and hook the audience in and make them want to watch the rest of the film. We can hook them in by making sure we have an interesting storyline and try to make the audience ask themselves questions.  If they are asking themselves questions it means that they are going to want to find out the answers and want to carry on watching the film. A good example of this is an opening sequence to a film that a student made from another school. I have embedded a video in to this post.

Another way of making sure that our audience is drawn in to our film is by using generic conventions effectively so that this particular audience who like this particular genre are happy with how we done our film and it meets the criteria of the ‘action’ genre.  This is important because if the audience have come to watch a certain genre, they are going to expect to see the conventions of that particular genre so they will enjoy the film.

From researching into other action films I have noticed at the start the location is always somewhere a bit different to what you’d think. For example a lot of movies are set abroad in major cities like in taken 2 was set in a city in Turkey.  At the start of these movies they make sure that the audience are aware that they are in a special location so this maybe something my group would have to think about when creating our film opening.
There is also a theory known as ‘the star theory’ which is helped to hook the audience and keep them watching. This theory is that the bigger the ‘star’ in your movie, the more likely the audience is going to watch it because they know the actors and have seen some of their previous films. This theory wouldn’t be any use to me when making my opening of a film because I am making an independent film not a mainstream so obviously we will not have the money to hire actors

Jelly baby activity

Title sequence planning

This activity is known as the ‘jelly baby activity’. I have used it to help me plan for my title sequences and to make sure they have a good structure and they are in a good order. It has helped us to see what our film opening will look like roughly so we know exactly what we are doing. As you can see from above we have made up some names for who directed the film etc. and have made some notes on the paper about how long the title will be shown on the screen for so when we come to actually making it and editing it in we know how long to have it for. The jelly babies in this activity work as the actors. They are placed on the paper like they would be on the screen of a film so again you know the exact shot you would be creating.

I think doing this activity will help our group because it is going to save us time so that we do not have to go out and film without knowing exactly what we are doing. This means we would save time because we can just go straight to the filming as we have already decided what shots are needed. Although this seems like a very simple activity to do, it is a good one to do because it is going to benefit our group well because we will be fully planned.
